Culmore Cleanup

The 2009 Culmore Cleanup took place on May 2 from 9 a.m. to Noon. Every year a cleanup of the Culmore area in Falls Church is organized to rid the streets of litter and bring awareness to keeping the community clean. About 220 volunteers fanned out over the community from the Alexandria line on Route 7 to the Dar Al Hijrah Mosque; along Columbia Pike from the Arlington County line to Blair Road: from Route 7 at Nevius Strreet, past Jeb Stuart High School to Beachway Drive; along Beachway Drive to Blair Road to Columbia Pike; and along all the neighborhood streets within that perimeter. They wore white T-shirts with the cleanup logo and the names and logos of major sponsors and they carried cleanup materials and water. Before the cleanup they were treated to juice, coffee, hot chocolate, muffins and doughnuts and after the cleanup to juice, bagels, and coffeecake. The local fire department participated as did Hidden Oaks Nature Center and the Fairfax County Health Department, all stressing their interest in safety. The weather was perfect and everyone had a good time making their community shine.

To complete this community project, support is requested from local organizations and volunteers in the form of monetary donations, food, water, door prizes, or volunteers (individuals or teams are welcome!). All donations go toward the cleanup and are appreciated! Monetary donations pay for supplies - food, water, gloves, trash bags, and identifying T-shirts for volunteers. Door prizes were given to the volunteers who participated in the cleanup.

If you would like to help in the fall or next spring please contact Priscilla Weck at 703-820-0579, or by e-mail: psweck@cox.net.

Major supporters of this community effort include the Dar Al Hijrah Mosque, John Marshall Bank, and Rotary Club of Bailey's Crossroads. Other supporters include many businesses in the area including Bailey's Crossroads Auto Body; Euro-Market Chevron; and Joan & Frank Sellers, Weichert Realtors.
